MCG cracks down on encroachments across Gurugram

Civic body intensifies drive to clear public spaces, vows strict action against repeat offenders

In a large-scale anti-encroachment drive on Saturday, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) removed several temporary structures including carts, hawkers, tin sheds and illegal dhabas set up along roadsides across multiple locations in the city.

According to officials, the MCG teams carried out operations in Udyog Vihar Phase-4, Subedar Major Laxmi Chand Road (Sector 18), Airtel Park (Sector 18), IFFCO Chowk, Mehrauli Road, MG Road Metro Station, Sukhrali, Sarhaul, Udyog Vihar Phases 2 and 3, Shankar Chowk, Sushant Lok Phase-1, Sushant Marg, Sector 43, Sector 27, Galleria Road (Sector 28) and surrounding areas.

The encroachment removal was conducted in the presence of police personnel. During the campaign, goods of the encroachers were seized and they were issued stern warnings against repeat violations. Authorities also stated that legal action would be initiated against those who continue to flout the rules.

“This campaign aims to free public spaces from encroachments and ensure smooth traffic flow for residents,” said MCG Additional Commissioner Mahavir Prasad. “It is an essential step toward maintaining the city’s aesthetic appeal and enhancing civic amenities.”

He added that despite multiple warnings, illegal structures and vendors continued to mushroom across city streets, forcing the civic body to take strict action. He also announced that such drives would be carried out regularly in the coming days, reaffirming MCG’s commitment to making Gurugram an encroachment-free city.

The MCG has also formed joint teams with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to inspect and act against encroachments on a regular basis.

However, concerns remain over the effectiveness of these drives due to weak follow-up measures. In many areas, vendors reportedly return within days of the removal operations.

For instance, after a joint MCG-GMDA team cleared encroachments in Sector 46 HUDA Market last week, street vendors and shopkeepers were once again seen occupying parking areas, pavements and roadsides with apparent impunity.

Critics say without stronger enforcement and legal action, the civic bodies’ efforts may not have lasting impact.
