To control noise pollution, the Gurugram police in Sohna used a road roller to crush modified motorcycle silencers on Wednesday. Last month, the traffic police had issued 89 challans amounting to Rs 8.90 lakh for modified silencers, mostly set on Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles, and pressure horns.

A senior police officer said that the crackdown was in response to complaints from residents about the nuisance caused by modified exhausts, particularly those producing a “pataka” (firecracker) sound.

A police spokesperson said that besides taking continuing action against those violating traffic rules, the police were also keeping a check on drivers who used modified vehicles.

Challans were also issued to the violators on Wednesday.

“The police will continue to take similar action against those who violate the rules by installing modified silencers and those who cause trouble and inconvenience to the general public,” the spokesperson added.
