Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsIn a move aimed at easing the organisation of Ramleela performances during Navratri, the Delhi Government will now grant all necessary permissions through a single-window system at the district level. This was stated by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at Raj Niwas, attended by the CM, officials from the Delhi Ramleela Federation and senior officials from relevant departments.
The CM said the system, to be operated through the office of the District Magistrate, would ensure that organisers no longer faced delays in securing land or no-objection certificates (NOCs). Around 600 Ramleelas are staged in the capital every year, including 100 large-scale performances, she noted. This year, the shows will run from September 22 to October 2.
Key decisions include reducing the land security deposit from Rs 20 to Rs 15 per sq m, and increasing the space allowed for entertainment zones from 25 per cent to 40 per cent of the total venue area. To handle disputes related to rides and food stalls, a special committee has been set up comprising a DDA deputy director and two federation members, which will coordinate with other departments if needed.
Gupta said organisers had earlier flagged issues in obtaining NOCs from agencies like the Delhi Development Authority and the Municipal Corporation’s horticulture department. They had also sought the provision of an ambulance at each venue, a suggestion under consideration.
Highlighting Ramleela’s cultural importance, the CM said the performances were “a symbol of religious faith and a living tradition” that foster social unity. “Lord Ram is the embodiment of the universal form, and the people of Delhi have deep devotion towards him,” she added.
