Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsThe National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Sunday strongly condemned the alleged assault on students at the Jamia Millia Islamia on September 19, calling the incident “inhumane and unacceptable.” According to the student outfit, university guards reportedly dragged and assaulted students before handing them over to the Delhi Police. Once in the cops’ custody, the students were allegedly subjected to further beatings and communal slurs.
NSUI national president Varun Choudhary has written to the Jamia Vice-Chancellor, demanding the immediate suspension of the guilty guards, strict accountability of responsible officials and a public apology to the students affected.
“Universities are meant to nurture and empower students, not silence them with brutality and fear. Such incidents are an assault on democratic values, student rights and the very spirit of education,” Choudhary said, reiterating NSUI’s full support for the students, promising to continue fighting against any attempt to suppress student voices through violence or intimidation.
