With talks between rural leaders and the government failing to yield results, villagers from across Delhi are preparing for a Mahapanchayat on September 13 to oppose the proposed toll tax at the Urban Extension Road (UER-2).

Palam 360 Khap chief Chaudhary Surendra Solanki, who is leading the protest, said the event will see participation from thousands of villagers, farmers and Khap representatives from different parts of rural Delhi. “Toll tax has never been imposed on rural areas in Delhi’s history, and we will not tolerate it now,” he said.

According to Solanki, the villagers feel betrayed as their land was acquired by previous governments at meagre rates, and now, the imposition of toll tax will further burden them. He stressed that the BJP government, elected after 27 years in Delhi’s villages, must stand by its promises and withdraw the toll plan.

The Mahapanchayat, scheduled for Saturday, seeks to send a strong message to the authorities, demanding an immediate rollback of the toll tax on rural residents.
