A retired Wing Commander and four members of his family, who were sleeping in their flat, were seriously burnt after fire broke out in the flat located on 13th floor of the Essel Tower on MG Road in the wee hours today.

After getting information about the incident, the police and Fire Brigade teams reached the spot. It took firemen around two hours to control the fire. All injured were being treated in a private hospital. The cause of the fire was said to be a short-circuit.

A senior fire official said the fire was reported at 3.37 am on Tuesday.

“After getting information about the mishap, our two vehicles left for the spot within a minute. It didn't take even 10 minutes for our personnel to reach the accident site. The Fire Brigade team brought the flames under control. The vehicles returned at 5 am and complete details are recorded with us,” said Rameshwar, Fire Officer at the Sector 29 fire station.
