The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the personal appearance of the Secretary of the Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi government, in a plea seeking the closure of schools due to worsening air quality. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, was irked by the non-filing of responses by the DoE and other respondents, including the Centre, despite being served with notices in September 2025.

The court noted that the DoE had failed to assist in the matter, prompting the summons for the Secretary to appear on December 1, 2025. The court also ordered the DoE and the Delhi government to file their counter-affidavit.
