Students protest for over 40 hrs

Students of South Asian University (SAU) are on protest for the past around 40 hours demanding justice for the sexual assault victim. During the protest, students were seen holding placards that read “A safe campus is not a privilege, it’s a right’, ‘stop the delay’, etc.

The protesting students submitted a memorandum of demands to the administration. They sought transparent investigation in the matter, immediate termination of warden Anupama, Dean of Students and university Proctor.

Condemning the incident, the SAU asserted that it has a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and all forms of violence against women.

“We the SAU community, faculty, staff and students stand in solidarity in light of the alleged horrific act of sexual violence that has been reported on campus. South Asian University condemns this alleged act of sexual violence, in the strongest terms and in one voice. We stand with our students, and assure them of our full support. The SAU has a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and all forms of violence against women. We strongly condemn, and stand in support and solidarity,” it said in a statement.

Student organisations also condemned the assault and demanded an immediate action against the culprits.

“The incident of sexual assault at South Asian University is deeply disturbing. The NSUI demands swift and transparent action. Safety of students, especially women, cannot be compromised. We urge the Delhi Police to ensure the strictest punishment for guilty,” said Varun Choudhary, National President, NSUI.

Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) termed the incident “deeply tragic and unacceptable,” urging the university and government to ensure a “prompt, fair investigation” and punish those responsible. “We urge the administration to act quickly and ensure the guilty face the harshest consequences,” said Sarthak Sharma, ABVP Delhi State Secretary.

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) held a protest demanding justice, alleging the involvement of security staff, workers and students in the crime. “This is not an isolated incident, but a sad and furious continuation of the rising sexual terror unleashed on students,” said Mehina Fathima, Joint Secretary, SFI Delhi.
