Target to complete Barapullah Ph-3 flyover by year-end: PWD Minister
The Delhi Government aims to complete the long-pending Barapullah Phase 3 flyover by December 2025, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma said on Monday during an on-site inspection.
The minister blamed the previous AAP government’s “administrative inaction and delay in payments” for holding up the crucial infrastructure project for years.
This was Verma’s second visit to the site within two months of taking office, a move that signals the BJP-led government’s intent to fast-track stalled infrastructure projects. The flyover, once complete, will link Mayur Vihar Phase-I in East Delhi with the AIIMS in South Delhi, connecting to the existing Barapullah corridor and significantly easing east-west traffic.
“Our target is to operationalise this flyover by December. It’s an important project for Delhi that had been stalled due to the apathy of the previous government. After taking charge, we’ve ensured that the work progresses rapidly,” said Verma.
According to PWD officials, 89 per cent of the construction has been completed. However, the final phase is awaiting clearance from the Forest Department for relocating around 250 trees. Verma said efforts were being made to expedite this process in coordination with the forest authorities under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
He said: “The previous government neither released the payment of the contractor on time nor pursued the necessary tree relocation approvals. This negligence led to years of delays and increased costs.”
The Barapullah Phase-3 project was approved in 2014 and the construction began in 2015, with an initial completion target of 2017. However, lack of inter-departmental coordination and frequent administrative hurdles kept pushing the deadline.
PWD officials now claim that the technical bottlenecks have been cleared and regular inspections are being held to keep the project on track. “We are fully committed to seeing this through. Infrastructure delays will no longer be the norm in Delhi,” Verma said.
Once operational, the Barapullah Phase-3 flyover is expected to drastically reduce travel time between East and South Delhi, and provide a smoother, more efficient commuting experience for thousands of daily commuters.
