Three persons were killed and two others injured when a truck allegedly ran over a group of homeless individuals sleeping on a footpath in the Shastri Park area of North East Delhi in the early hours of Monday.

The incident took place around 4.30 am near the Tarbuz market, close to the Shastri Park Metro Station.

According to the police, the truck was heading towards the Iron Bridge from Seelampur when it veered onto the central verge, hitting five men who were asleep on the footpath.

The victims were rushed to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, where three were declared dead. One of them was identified as Mohammad Jakir (35) of Bihar’s Katihar who worked here as a labourer. The two injured, identified as Mushtaq (35) and Kamlesh (36), were transferred to GTB Hospital for treatment.

The truck driver fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle.
