Tourism Minister blames previous govts for tragedy

Delhi Minister for Culture and Tourism Kapil Mishra has blamed the previous governments for the tragedy in Northeast Delhi’s Welcome locality.

“In certain areas, buildings are collapsing,” he said alluding to unchecked illegal constructions in densely populated localities.

Mishra cited a similar incident in Mustafabad, warning that unless the authorities confront the issue directly, such tragedies will recur.

“In the last 10-15 years, a terrible game of corruption has been played due to vote bank politics. Massive corruption has led to unauthorised multi-storey structures. Six-floor buildings are coming up without any safety standards,” the minister said.

He further warned that adjacent buildings in the area are also at risk and could collapse during debris removal. “Those who allowed such buildings to come up are responsible for these deaths. They’ve fled Delhi, leaving behind these ticking time bombs,” he added.

In a post on X, he demanded a thorough investigation and stringent punishment for those responsible.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her condolences over the incident. “It is extremely sad to note that the incident has claimed two precious lives. Heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased,” she posted on X. Gupta also directed the District Magistrate to submit a detailed report.

Northeast Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari urged residents to stay away from the congested area until rescue operations are complete. “Since the location is very narrow, people should avoid entering the alley until the rescue is complete,” he posted.
