Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has called for the expansion of India's tourism sector, asserting that it will soon become the largest contributor to the country’s GDP. Speaking at the Tourism Sustainability Summit 2025, organised by FHRAI, Shekhawat said, “Tourism is the growth engine of India. With our economy growing rapidly, the tourism sector has immense potential to match this pace.”

He emphasised the urgent need for climate resilience in tourism, warning that climate change poses serious challenges. “Glaciers are shrinking and this demands immediate intervention. Sustainable tourism is the only way forward,” he said.

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Suman Billa, highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the sector. “With app-based travel solutions gaining popularity, technology can drive tourism growth. However, we must ensure that this growth is sustainable and does not lead to cultural dilution,” he said.

Madhya Pradesh’s Principal Secretary for Tourism, Sheo Shankar Shukla, showcased the state’s rich tourism potential, including 14 UNESCO heritage sites and upcoming rural and tribal tourism initiatives.

FHRAI President K Syama Raju stressed the need for collaboration between policymakers and industry leaders. “India’s vast natural resources can be transformed into global tourist attractions with the right strategy,” he said.
