Traffic police update CCTV software to check violations
To strengthen enforcement against traffic law violations, Gurugram police have updated the software in CCTV cameras installed across the city. The new update will allow traffic police to identify vehicles operating without valid pollution control certificates, insurance papers, and other essential documents. This move is aimed at tightening the noose around those flouting traffic laws and ensuring better compliance.
The police had also stopped cash challan payments by installing 250 Paytm QR codes at different locations.
Gurugram has approximately 10,000 CCTV cameras installed across the city, with a significant portion dedicated to traffic monitoring and issuing challans, including AI-equipped cameras at key junctions to detect violations such as helmet and seatbelt non-compliance. These cameras are monitored by the traffic police through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
Earlier, with the help of these cameras, challans were issued only for red light jumping, zebra crossing, triple riding, wrong side driving, without HSRP number plate, without helmet etc. Now with the help of this new software, while making the above challan, other documents of the vehicle whose validity has expired like pollution certificate (fine Rs 10,000), insurance (fine Rs 2,000) etc. will also be challaned.
“The software in the cameras has been updated. Now, before driving your vehicle, you should check all the documents,” said Virender Vij, DCP (Crime).
He further added that cash payments for traffic challans have been completely abolished in Gurugram. Residents can now settle their traffic fines using a Paytm QR code, which has already been launched across the city. This initiative is expected to save time for commuters and provide a more convenient way for residents to pay their challans, even from the comfort of their homes.
