Acting on a tip-off, the team tried to intercept two wanted criminals. On being challenged, the duo opened fire at the police party while attempting to flee, an official said.

The police team retaliated in self-defence, during which one accused, Arman (26), a resident of JJ Colony, Bawana, sustained a gunshot wound in his right leg. He was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, the cop added.

Another accused, Basheer (24), also from JJ Colony, Bawana, was nabbed on the spot with an illegal firearm and a live cartridge.

In the crossfire, one of Arman’s bullets struck the bulletproof jacket of a police officer, but no injuries were reported, the official mentioned.

The Crime Team and the FSL were called in to examine the site and collect forensic evidence.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Arman has an extensive criminal record, with over 50 cases of robbery, snatching, and violations of the Arms Act registered against him.

Both accused are now in custody and further investigation is underway, the cop said.
