A 22-year-old woman was found dead at her in-laws’ house in Najafgarh here on August 21. Her family members alleged that their daughter died due to harassment over dowry.

The woman, identified as Komal, alias Varsha, was married to Aman, a resident of Badu Sarai village, Najafgarh, in April this year.

The police have registered a case against Aman and his parents under relevant sections of the BNS at the Chhawla police station.

According to the FIR, Komal’s father Dinesh alleged that his daughter was subjected to continuous cruelty and dowry demand by her husband and his parents, accusing them of driving her to suicide.

In his complaint, he said, “My daughter was not allowed to visit us. She was not even permitted to talk to us on the phone. Whenever she managed to talk to us, she told us that her in-laws were demanding dowry and harassing her.”

The police said they received information regarding the incident on August 21. They visited the spot and found Komal dead at her in-laws’ residence. The body was sent for post-mortem examination. Officials said the exact cause of the death would be confirmed after the forensic report.

Dinesh alleged that restrictions imposed by Komal’s in-laws isolated her from their family. “They did not allow her to visit our house and stop her from contacting us. Because of this pressure and harassment, my daughter has died,” the FIR quotes him as saying.

The arrests would be made once preliminary inquiries were complete, the police said on Sunday. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination.

Officials said they were awaiting the forensic report to determine the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, statements of neighbours and relatives are being recorded.
