They said the incident appears to have stemmed from a dispute over a relationship between the duo.
The deceased has been identified as Muskan (24), while the injured youth has been identified as Neeraj (25).
Investigators suspect that Neeraj reportedly first shot the woman and then turned the gun on himself on Saturday evening. Neeraj, who suffered a bullet injury on his chest, is in a critical condition.
According to police, the control room received a call regarding a firing incident around 5:15 pm from the Old Slum Quarters in Punjabi Bagh. When the police reached the spot, they found Muskan lying on the mattress in one room with a gunshot wound on her head. Neeraj was found critically injured in another room.
They were shifted to a nearby hospital where Muskan was declared dead on arrival, while Neeraj is undergoing treatment.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the two were involved in a relationship and a quarrel might have led to the shooting. The police are questioning their family members to establish the sequence of events.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
