The uncertainty about big-screen outings may force us to say, ‘New Year, new variant and nothing changed.’ But all is not wrong in the world as long as filmmakers are shipping their films and series through OTT platforms to keep us entertained. We bring you the list of hard-to-miss international series and films of 2022. And if Covid’s latest variants allow, some theatre outings are in store as well.

The seasonal dance

The makers of Peaky Blinders released the trailer of their much-awaited sixth and final season on January 1, which brings us to the conclusion that this Cillian Murphy-starrer period drama is all set to woo the audience once more. One last time, the audience will get to see Helen McCrory (Aunt Polly), whom we lost last year to breast cancer.

Enola Holmes

Bridgerton impressed the viewers with its maiden series, and the trailer of Season 2 came out on Christmas 2021. The series will release on March 25. Much like Money Heist, the makers of Ozark will release its fourth season in two parts, the first one will be out on January 21 globally. The 2020 Netflix original film, Enola Holmes, which had earlier plans to be released in theatres, was one of the films that saw biggest first day opening on Netflix in 2020. Its sequel, Enola Holmes 2, is at the production stage and is expected to drop this year. The audience also has high hopes from the Amazon Original series, As We See It. Also, Extrapolations, an Apple TV anthology drama series will release this year. Based on the effects of climate change, it has an exclusive cast from Kit Harrington to Meryl Streep to David Schwimmer to Tobey Maguire to our very own Adarsh Gourav of The White Tiger fame.

Death on the Nile

On October 5, 2021, HBO Max dropped the teaser of fictional epic drama, Game of Thrones’ prequel, House of the Dragon. While its release date has not been decided yet, it is expected to come out this year itself.

Theatre traffic

Marvel, after giving the blockbuster film Spider-Man: No Way Home, is set for another film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – Part One (2022). Apart from this, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, are also set for theatrical release and so will DC universe’s much-awaited superhero flick, The Batman (2022). Other superhero flicks to hit the theatres, Thor: Love and Thunder, The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Ozark

Among action movies, the top names are Mission: Impossible 7, Bullet Train and Top Gun: Maverick. Another big ensemble film, Death on the Nile, is set to hit the theatres on February 11 which also stars Ali Fazal. The actor took to Instagram on Tuesday to share the news, “Death on the Nile, in theatre soon. Humbled to have had the chance to be immortalised into one of Agatha Christie’s characters . Thank you Ken . . And to the wonderful cast for being such a sporty and a fun bunch to share notes and screen with…”

Acclaimed director Robert Eggers’ The Northman, an epic revenge thriller which explores the period of the Vikings will also be an interesting catch on 70mm screen. Among the sequels, we have Jurassic World: Dominion and Avatar 2, the former is complete and the latter is at the post-production stage.

The reunion

If Friends: The Reunion was one nostalgic special show of 2021, then the makers of Harry Potter made this New Year special with Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts for the franchise fans. The special show is available in India for Amazon Prime Video subscribers.

Peaky Blinders

And the animation trends

This year will see a long list of animated movies. Turning Red and Lightyear are two animated films which have announced their release dates, March 7 and June 17.

Disney Hotstar has dropped the trailer of The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, which made Ice Age fans much happy for Buck Wild’s character. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – Part One is also an animated film.
