Known officially as the International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS), World Heritage Day is a global wake-up call to honour, protect and learn from the cultural and natural marvels that shaped our civilization.

Theme 2025: “Heritage Under Fire – Learning from 60 Years of ICOMOS”

This year’s theme is a siren song: “Heritage under Threat from Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness and Learning from 60 Years of ICOMOS Actions.”

From climate catastrophes to armed conflicts and unchecked urban sprawl, our shared heritage is under siege. The message is clear — it’s time to gear up, act smart and learn from six decades of heritage protection led by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites).

Flashback: The Day That Started It All

The idea for World Heritage Day didn’t just fall out of the sky. Back in 1982, ICOMOS pitched the concept and by 1983, UNESCO had locked it in. Since then, April 18 has become a global stage to showcase local pride, celebrate monuments and push for preservation through education and sustainable tourism.
