The report has been released recently.
There were 4,652 fatal accidents in the state, while 2,984 resulted in grievous injury, 2,461 in minor injuries and 366 were non-injury accidents in 2023 in the state.
There was a marginal rise of 0.3% in accidents, a 1.1% rise in fatalities and a 2% dip in injuries to people from 2022. In 2022, a total of 10,429 road accidents resulted in 4,915 deaths and injuries to 8,519 people.
The severity of road accidents, calculated as road accident deaths per 100 accidents, was 47.5 in 2023, compared to 47.1 in 2022.
1K killed in hit from back
While classifying the accidents in terms of collision, it came out that there were 2,338 (20.3%) accidents in Haryana where being hit from the back was involved, killing 1,089 people. There were 1,750 (16.7%) hit-and-run accidents, resulting in 923 fatalities.
There were 374 accidents where a collision took place with a parked vehicle, resulting in the death of 170 people. There were 1,275 accidents where there was a hit from the side, killing 526 people. In 478 accidents of running off the road, 228 died, and in collisions with a fixed object, 121 killed in 247 accidents.
There were 1,611 (15.4%) accidents where a head-on collision took place, killing 812 people, while 183 cases were of a vehicle overturn resulting in the death of 84.
According to the classification of accidents based on road features, it was found that 117 accidents occurred on potholed roads, resulting in 50 fatalities in 2023. Additionally, 354 accidents took place on under-construction roads, resulting in 160 deaths. A total of 742 accidents took place on curved roads, killing 285 people.
However, the maximum number of accidents, at 4,006 (38.3%), took place on straight roads, resulting in 2,066 deaths.
A total of 812 accidents took place in rainy weather, killing 269 people. Foggy and misty conditions resulted in 1,058 accidents, killing 426 people.
In the classification of fatalities, two-wheeler users were killed the most. A total of 1,585 (31.9%) were killed in 2023, while 1,386 (27.9%) were pedestrians and 655 (13.2%) were using cars, taxis, vans or LMV. A total of 410 (8.3%) people who were killed were using trucks or lorries. A total of 226 underage drivers were killed in 2023.
64% accidents due to overspeeding
In the classification of accidents in terms of traffic violations, it was found that 6,272 (64.7%) accidents occurred due to overspeeding, resulting in the deaths of 3,124 (62.9%) people. The accidents due to the consumption of alcohol and drugs were 66, killing 28 people.
There were 397 accidents due to driving on the wrong side, killing 195 people. There were 153 accidents involving the use of a mobile phone, resulting in the deaths of 67 people.
Out of 10,463 accidents in 2023, there were 881 where drivers didn't have a licence and 72 had a learner's licence.
A total of 499 drivers and 259 passengers were killed for non-wearing of helmets, which accounts for 15.3% of total deaths.
Also, 367 drivers and 258 passengers were killed for not wearing seat belts, which accounts for 12.6% of total deaths.
