Sonepat, July 31
A 13-year-old boy fell into an open manhole on Tuesday night on the Sonepat-Murthal road. His body was recovered from the main sewerage line. The police have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sent the body for a postmortem.
The deceased was identified as Vivek, a student of Class VI in a government school. When the mishap occurred, Vivek, along with his younger brother Pawan and another child, was on his way home after bringing some eatables from the market, when he fell into the manhole, the lid of which was open. His brother raised an alarm. His parents reached the spot and his father Jatin jumped into the sewer, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, a team of the Municipal Corporation (MC) and the police reached the spot. An NDRF team from Rohtak also reached. The flow of water was stopped. About 11.30 pm, the team found the boy in an unconscious state. The police rushed him to the civil hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Jatin, a labourer, in his complaint to the Sector 27 police on Wednesday said that the manhole was without a lid. He alleged that his son lost his life due to the negligence of the contractor and the officials concerned.
