The police have registered a case in connection with an assault on a police team by a mob of 150 persons at Meesa village in the district last night. No arrest has been made so far.

According to Jagbir Singh, SHO, Chandut police station, the incident took place when a police team, led by Sub-Inspector Hanish Khan, reached the spot after information of a road blockade by village residents over the matter of a firing incident. As the police tried to resolve the issue and remove the blockade, a mob of around 150 persons armed with sticks, stones and bricks resorted to assaulting the policemen, said Jagbir.

He said while the police vehicle was damaged, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sirajuddin was pulled out of the police van and subjected to manhandling. He was assaulted by some persons without any provocation, resulting in injuries to him. The mob also tried to snatch his weapons, including the official pistol and an AK-47 gun from the cops, besides attempting to put the vehicle on fire. The mob deflated one of the tires of the vehicle.
