‘Aachman’ is a ritual — where a small amount of water is taken in the palm and sipped — performed before a prayer.

Upender Singhal, honorary secretary of the Kurukshetra Development Board, said, “Brahma Sarovar Tirtha is associated with Lord Brahma. A large number of devotees visit Brahma Sarovar every year to pay obeisance and to pray for their ancestors. The pilgrims take a holy dip and perform rituals. They also perform aachman here and wish to take the holy water with them. It was decided to develop aachman zones at different ghats for the convenience of the devotees.”

“A tender has already been allocated for the construction of the aachman zones and efforts are being made to get the new facility introduced before the upcoming International Gita Mahotsav. The water purification systems will be installed at five ghats, from where the devotees will be able to get Sarovar’s purified water through taps,” he added.

Brahma Sarovar is the biggest asset for KDB and the board has been making continuous efforts to increase attractions and facilities for the devotees and tourists who reach here in large numbers, the honorary secretary said.

“Since a number of historic events and stories are associated with Brahma Sarovar and there are several religious sites around the Sarovar, it has also been decided to make people aware of all these sites for which a brochure will be prepared soon. There is also a plan to change the façade of the outer area of Brahma Sarovar to give a new experience to the pilgrims and tourists,” he added.

Meanwhile, Madan Mohan Chhabra, chairman of 48-kos Tirtha Monitoring Committee, during whose tenure as the board honorary secretary the aachman zone project was prepared, said, “Though Brahma Sarovar receives fresh water through a canal, the project was envisaged to provide purified water to the devotees. Under the project, RO water purification systems will be installed where the devotees will be able to get water for aachman and perform rituals easily, without thinking twice about the quality of the water. The aachman zones will also help increase the beauty of Brahma Sarovar.”
