Twentyfour of the 41 persons are MBBS students from a private college while the remaining 17 are university employees. Also, the university Controller of Examination (CoE), Dr Amrish Bhagol, has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
Six regular university employees, from the rank of clerk to deputy superintendent, have been placed under suspension while the services of six outsourced staff members have been discontinued. Two regular employees, Roshan Lal and Rohit, were suspended last month while the services of three outsourced staff members, Deepak, Indu and Reetu, were discontinued, said officials.
The action has been taken by Vice-Chancellor Dr HK Aggarwal after examining the inquiry report submitted by a three-member investigation committee yesterday.
Talking to The Tribune, Dr Aggarwal confirmed the action, stating that no one involved in the scandal would be spared. The scam came to light last month when an MBBS student of a private college filed a complaint with the university authorities, alleging that students were unauthorisedly rewriting answer sheets for MBBS annual and supplementary exams outside the campus. Those behind the scam allegedly charged Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per subject to ensure students passed the exams.
A video, which was part of the complaint, purportedly showed students seated on beds and chairs rewriting their answer sheets under the supervision of a university employee. The complaint further claimed that students used erasable ink pens while writing answer sheets during their examination, which they later erased using hair dryers and rewrote answers with the help of textbooks.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, Dr Aggarwal had formed the three-member inquiry panel, led by Dr MK Garg, Director of Kalpana Chawla Medical College in Karnal. The inquiry report, which was to be submitted within a month, confirmed the allegations made in the complaint.
On Friday, the following regular university employees were suspended: Jai Prakash, Kapil Dev, Navdeep, Sandeep, Anil and Sanjeev. The outsourced employees who faced action were Rohtas, Sunil, Naseeb, Pardeep, Gurmeet and Jai Bhagwan. All the suspended officials had either currently posted or had worked with the university’s examination branch in the past, said sources.
