The All-India Inter University Shooting Men and Women Championships 2023-24 kicked off at the shooting range of Kurukshetra University here on Monday evening.

As per information, 366 shooters representing 75 teams from across the country are participating in the four-day championship, which will conclude on February 8.

Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, Vice-Chancellor (V-C), Kurukshetra University; and Dr Baljeet Singh Sekhon, Joint Secretary, Youth Affairs Sports, Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, attended the inaugural ceremony.

V-C Prof Som Nath said the championship is being held under the 60 shot rule. He said budding shooters from various universities are taking part in the championship.

Kurukshetra University has established one of the largest shooting ranges among the nearby universities in the region.

Highlighting the achievements, the V-C said the university secured the third position in both sessions 2021-22 and 2022-23, and bagged the sixth position in the Khelo India University Games in 2022 in Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Sekhon, in his address, pledged support for establishing a center of excellence for shooting on the university campus. Highlighting the significance of the championship, he said 12 teams and 16 individual players would qualify for the upcoming prestigious Khelo India University Games, scheduled to be held in Assam.

Dr Rajesh Sobti, director of sports, Kurukshetra University, said all international rules and guidelines are being followed in the championship.
