The Rs 5.5 crore food street will be housed in an existing structure, which was lying unused next to Gandhi Ground. The site is situated along the Ambala-Saha NH 444-A and the construction work is in the final stages.

The site previously served as a garbage dump, followed by a vegetable and fruit market, both of which have since been closed.

Vij said the Ambala Sadar Municipal Council had invited Expression of Interest (EOI) applications for the allotment of shops. All 60 shops will be allotted to vendors soon and 16 applications have been received so far.

He stated that the food street will offer food lovers a unique dining experience in Ambala Cantonment. The project will also create employment opportunities.

Vij added that the entire market will be air-conditioned with a common seating area for visitors. A parking facility is being constructed adjacent to the food street. Directions have been issued to the officials to create a pleasant ambiance to enhance the dining experience of customers.

The market will have granite stone flooring besides other amenities. Efforts will be made to get the stalls of renowned food vendors from various states installed here, Vij said.

A state-of-the-art treatment plant will be installed to treat water and food waste from the shops before discharging it into the drainage system. This will help maintain cleanliness and prevent pollution in the nearby drains, Vij added.

Confirming the development, an official said the minister had directed the MC officials to utilise the space and set up a night food street.
