Ambala Division restores Kalka-Shimla rail bridge, closes key level crossings for safety

In a major infrastructure achievement, the Ambala Division of Northern Railway has completed the permanent rehabilitation of Bridge No. 800 on the Kalka-Shimla Railway (KSR) section, which was badly damaged during the flash floods of August 14, 2023.

A Railway spokesperson said, “The permanent restoration of the bridge was completed following a locomotive trial. Despite poor site access and heavy rains, the team completed the work within a planned five-day block, ensuring the safe restoration of this vital UNESCO World Heritage route.”

The restoration marks a significant step in strengthening railway resilience in the region, particularly on the iconic narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla line, which draws both tourists and daily commuters.

In another key initiative, the Ambala Division has permanently closed two interlocked traffic level crossing gates — one each at the Sirhind (SIR) yard and Sunam Udham Singh Wala (SFMU) yard.

“With these gates eliminated, the risk of accidents at busy crossings is removed, and train operations are smoother and safer,” the spokesperson said. Signalling systems have also been upgraded in tandem to support uninterrupted train movement without dependence on manual gate operations.

Further enhancing safety, advanced track detection systems have been introduced between Sirhind and Govindgarh to improve monitoring and control, the official added.

“These achievements reflect Ambala Division’s continued commitment to improving passenger safety, maintaining reliable rail connectivity, and modernising critical infrastructure in line with Indian Railways’ broader vision,” the spokesperson concluded.
