Ambala Sadar MC turns cow dung into manure

To tackle the persistent cow dung menace caused by the presence of Gwal Mandis in the Ambala Sadar area, the Municipal Council (MC) has initiated an innovative project to collect cow dung and convert it into organic manure. This effort aims to improve sanitation, address public grievances and support sustainable waste management.The problem, which has plagued the Rambagh road area in Gwal Mandi, stems from dairy owners dumping cow dung in open spaces. This has created unhygienic conditions, blocked drains and caused road accidents, particularly during the rainy season when the cow dung makes roads slippery.

For years, shifting the dairies to the outer limits of the Sadar area has been a long-pending demand. However, to provide immediate relief, the municipal council has started collecting cow dung from the area and processing it into high-quality organic manure, which will be used in local parks and distributed to residents.

Ritu Sharma, Swachh Bharat Mission coordinator with the Municipal Council, said, “Dumping cow dung in open areas not only creates an unbearable stench and unhygienic conditions but also tarnishes the image of the area. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, we are focusing on improving sanitation. Earlier, we experimented with preparing wood from cow dung. Now, under the direction of the District Municipal Commissioner, we have begun producing manure.”

She added, “Nearly 50 tonnes of cow dung have been collected so far. With the help of Shilpy Agro and Samaj Sewa Society, which have expertise in this field, the manure-making process is underway. The first batch is yet to be ready, and once prepared, it will be used in parks and along tree-lined roads.”

Boosting sustainability, public participation

District Municipal Commissioner (DMC) Sachin Gupta stated, “The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure proper disposal of cow dung, improve sanitation and promote sustainability. The manure will also help enhance soil health. Additionally, it will be made available to the public.”

He further highlighted the MC’s broader environmental initiatives, including a plastic buyback programme aimed at reducing plastic waste. Gupta said, “Residents are encouraged to actively participate in these programmes to make Ambala Sadar cleaner and greener. We are working towards a higher ranking in the Swachh Survekshan.”

The Municipal Council is also working on establishing a modern dairy complex in Brahmin Majra village. This facility will provide a dedicated space for dairy operations, moving them out of residential areas. The complex will include a biogas plant, further contributing to sustainable waste management in the area.

Through these measures, the MC Ambala Sadar is addressing long-standing civic challenges while laying the foundation for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community.
