Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsAmid the nationwide debate over alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls, former Assandh MLA and senior Congress leader Shamsher Singh Gogi has urged the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Haryana, to provide the latest updated electoral roll of his Assandh Assembly segment in both digital and PDF formats.
In a letter addressed to the CEO, Gogi pressed for transparency in voter data, saying that it is necessary for ensuring the credibility of elections and safeguarding the rights of voters.
“This information is essential for public awareness, election-related activities and social work. Access to the updated roll would help in maintaining transparency in the electoral process, address errors and ensure that the interests of voters are safeguarded,” Gogi said.
The former MLA specifically sought information on the number of voters added and deleted between the 2019 Lok Sabha and Haryana Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
“I have requested to provide the data in a detailed and transparent manner so that citizens may clearly understand the changes,” said Gogi while stressing the need for clarity.
His demand comes at a time when Opposition leaders across the country have raised questions over the integrity of electoral rolls, citing irregularities, large-scale deletions and mismatched data across constituencies.
Gogi, who contested the 2024 Assembly elections from Assandh but lost to BJP candidate Yogendra Rana, said that trust in the Election Commission was vital for strengthening democracy. “Making the electoral roll easily available in digital and PDF form would not only build confidence in the Election Commission but also increase awareness among voters and encourage more citizens to actively participate in the democratic process,” he added.
He further appealed to the CEO to treat his request on an urgent basis as he has made this demand in larger public interest.
Political experts consider that his demand is expected to intensify political discussions in Haryana.
