Azad’s party may challenge BSP’s dominance on Jagadhri seat

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has dominated Jagadhri and Chhachhrauli (which is now the part of Jagadhri Assembly constituency) of Yamunanagar district. BSP candidates have emerged victorious from Jagadhari and erstwhile Chhachhrauli segments three times.

However, in these Assembly elections, it will not be an easy task for the BSP candidate from Jagadhri constituency. Political observers say the BSP candidate may face a tough competition from the candidate of Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), which has recently entered into an alliance with the JJP in Haryana.

Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) national president Chandrashekhar Azad is a youth icon among the Dalit, and “there is a possibility of division in the traditional vote bank of the BSP this time. A section of Dalit youths may support the Azad Samaj Party,” says a political observer.

The BSP has contested Assembly elections from Jagadhri and Chhachhrauli constituencies 11 times.

BSP MLAs have won thrice from here — Bishan Lal Saini (Jagadhri) in 2000, Arjan Singh (Chhachhrauli) in 2005 and Akram Khan (Jagadhri) in 2009.

BSP candidates have been runners-up six times — Akram Khan in 1991 and 1996 (Chhachhrauli), Bishan Lal Saini in 1991 and 1996 (Jagadhri), Rajiv Kumar in 2005 (Jagadhri) and Akram Khan in 2014 (Jagadhri).

However, BSP candidates Amir Hassan bagged the third position in 2000 from Chhachhrauli constituency and Adarsh Pal Singh in 2019 from Jagadhri constituency.

Jagadhri and erstwhile Chhachhrauli segment has been a part of the reserved Ambala Parliamentary seat.
