Karnal, June 22

The ruling BJP has suffered loss in the direct elections for the post of chairperson of the civic bodies in Karnal district as it won one seat in Karnal district out of three on which they had their candidates.

The BJP won only Gharaunda MC chairperson election and that too with a thin margin. In Kaithal district, the BJP-JJP alliance won all the three seats.

Out of four MCs in Karnal district, the BJP has fielded three candidates on party symbols while at Nissing MC chairperson polls, it’s youth wing state leader Janak Popli contested as an Independent candidate. Independent candidate Romi Singla won with a margin of 2300 votes by defeating Popli.

In Taraori MC chairperson election, BJP candidate Rajeev Narang was defeated by Nilokheri MLA and JJP supported independent candidate Virender Bansal by a margin of 538 votes.

In a close contest at Gharaunda MC chairperson post, BJP candidate Happy Luck Gupta won with a thin margin of 31 votes by defeating AAP Surinder Singla. Gupta got 5108, while Singla received 5077 votes. BJP rebel Vinod Kumar, who contested as an independent candidate, got 3172 votes. As many as 93 people opted for NOTA here.

In Assandh MC chairperson election, Congress leader and former MLA Zile Ram Sharma supported independent candidate Satish Kataria secured victory with a margin of 553 votes. He defeated BJP candidate Kamaljeet Ladi. Kataria got 4,408 votes, while Ladi received 3,855 votes.

Kaithal Municipal Council was a keenly watched contest, where BJP candidate for the post of chairperson Surbhi Garg defeated Congress leader Randeep Surjewala supported candidate Adarsh Thareja by a margin of 5174 votes.
