BSF jawan cremated with state honours at Rohtak village

BSF jawan Sunil Kumar (46), who attained martyrdom in an encounter with Naxalites in Manipur two days ago, was cremated with state honours at his native Kiloi village here on Tuesday.

As soon as Sunil’s body, wrapped in the Tricolour, reached the village in a special vehicle on Tuesday morning, villagers came out of their homes to have the last glimpse of the martyr and pay him their tributes.

Amid the slogans of ‘Shaheed Sunil Kumar Amar Rahe’, the BSF officers handed over the Tricolour to the martyr’s family. “Sunil Kumar was a brave soldier. He was filled with the spirit of serving the nation. He was of a very sociable nature, which made him loved by everyone,” said an official.

Sunil had joined the BSF nearly 18 years ago. He had come to the village a few days ago on leave and no one imagined that it would be his last visit here.

A contingent of personnel bid adieu to the martyr by firing bullets in the sky. Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda paid tribute to him and met his family members and offered his condolences.

On behalf of the district administration, Rohtak Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ashish Kumar paid tribute by offering a wreath on the mortal remains of the martyr. Former minister and BJP state spokesman Krishan Murti Hooda also attended the last rites.

“I will meet Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to urge him to get a statue of Sunil installed in the village,” said Murti on the occasion.
