On the last day of campaigning, candidates for the post of Mayor as well as councillors in 26 wards of Panipat made a final push to convince voters to elect them.

Polling for Panipat Municipal Corporation (MC) elections will be held on March 9. The results will be declared on March 12.

The candidates made all efforts to woo voters. While some held door-to-door campaign, others preferred road shows in their wards to show off their strength.

A total of four candidates for the mayoral post and 103 for the councillors’ posts are in the electoral fray.

Out of the four candidates for the mayoral post, the direct contest seems to be between BJP’s candidate Komal Saini and Congress’ Savita Garg.

Komal Saini, on the last day of campaigning, held a traditional ‘padyatra’ in ward no. 26 along with the councillor candidate Kusum Bhatt and BJP district president Dushyant Bhatt.

Saini appealed to voters to make the lotus bloom in the city for setting up a triple engine government on March 9 in all 26 wards.

She assured that after forming the triple engine government, development works would move three times faster in the city. Apart from door-to-door campaigning, BJP candidate Komal Saini also addressed public meetings with the councillor candidates in several wards on the last day of campaigning.

BJP’s district president Dushyant Bhatt claimed that all preparations have been made and there is a wave in the favour of the BJP in the MC poll. The BJP has won the Karnal Lok Sabha seat and all four seats of Panipat in the Assembly elections. Now, the BJP is going to win all 27 seats, including the mayoral post and the 26 councillors’ posts in the city by a huge margin, he said.

On the other hand, Congress’ mayoral candidate Savita Garg, along with councillor candidate from ward no. 1, Surbhi Sharma, held a door-to-door campaign in ward 1. Savita also held door-to-door campaigns in several other wards to woo voters.

Savita Garg said that she was receiving good response from the people in the city as she has raised basic problems of the people. “We promised the people that we would resolve their problems on priority and the people also wanted a change,” she said. Savita Garg appealed to the people to vote for the Congress on March 9.

Independent candidate and BJP rebel Anjali Sharma from ward 4, along with her supporters, held a bike rally in her ward on Friday.

Independent candidate Saroj Verma, wife of former Mayor Suresh Verma, along with their supporters held a door-to-door campaign in her ward.
