CBI to investigate Nagaland woman's death at Gurugram hospital

Acting on the demand of Nagaland’s prominent leaders, the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the CBI to investigate the death of a Nagaland woman at a Gurugram hospital.

Rosy Sangma, 29, had allegedly died after eating ice cream at the hospital’s ICU. The CBI will also investigate the death of her nephew, who was found dead in his hotel room a day after her death.

Sangam was admitted to the ICU of Alpha Hospital in Sector 10 of Gurugram after she complained of intense pain in her hands and feet and excessive bleeding. Though she was repeatedly stable, her condition deteriorated and she died after reportedly having ice cream in the presence of doctors.

In its order, the MHA said, “The Ministry has requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to inquire into the case of the deaths of Rosy Sangma and Samuel Sangma.”

It further said, “The case relates to the death of Rosy Sangma in a hospital in Gurgaon on June 24 this year after she had complained of a medical condition. Later, Samuel Sangma, a relative of Rosy Sangma, suspecting medical negligence, had an altercation with doctors and staff of the hospital. On the next day, June 25 the Delhi Police received information regarding the death of Samuel Sangmain, New Delhi.”

Her nephew and attendant, Samuel Sangma, had a fight with hospital staff accusing them of negligence. What raised many eyebrows was even he was found dead in a hotel room within 24 hours of Rosy’s death.

The family alleged negligence and foul play and had demanded a CBI investigation. The demand was supported by prominent leaders and residents of Nagaland who also ran a social media campaign in her support.
