The most important issue highlighted during the meeting was the development of Karna Canal, earlier famous as Mughal Canal, II and III for strengthening the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) financially.
“There is a need to expedite the second and third phases of the Karna Canal project. We apprised the CM that both phases of Karna Canal have not yet been developed even after three decades of development of the first phase. The development of both phases will strengthen the financial position of the KMC and help it become self-reliant,” said Anand. The development of markets of both phases will help in removing unauthorised encroachment and also beautify the stretch, said Brij Gupta.
“The CM has assured us that both phases will be developed for the development of Karnal city,” said Anand.
Besides, they highlighted the issue of shortage of staff in the MC, which was hampering day-to-day operations and public services. They urged the CM to ensure the filling of all vacant posts at the earliest. “We have raised the issue of staff shortage and also requested the revision of sanctioned posts as the city’s population and workload has significantly increased. Several posts in the MC are lying vacant. The CM has assured us that the process to fill all vacant positions will be initiated soon,” said Anand.
Brij Gupta said they had discussed various other development issues with the CM and also informed him about the ongoing anti-encroachment drive in the city, specifically the removal of the Sunday market from Karna Gate market by the MC, clarifying that the move had not led to public resentment.
