The incident took place on Fatehabad Road near the Badi Canal when a WagonR car, reversing close to the edge, lost balance and plunged into the deep, fast-flowing water. The driver, Babbu Singh, a resident of Ward No. 15, Ratia, was moments away from drowning, eyewitnesses said.

A passersby immediately dialled the emergency helpline 112, prompting the ERV-220 response unit to rush to the spot within minutes. Realising the gravity of the situation, Ratia Police Station incharge, Sub-Inspector Ranjit Singh, led a rescue operation.

Despite the strong current, Singh tied a rope around himself, broke the car window and pulled the panicking driver out — putting his own life on the line in the process.

The courageous act left bystanders teary eyed. “He didn’t think about himself. He just saved a life,” said one eyewitness, visibly moved by the officer’s bravery.
