Crop insurance scheme proves beneficial for farmers, says Agri Minister Rana

Haryana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana on Tuesday said the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has proven highly beneficial for farmers across the state, with claims worth over Rs 32 crore disbursed in Yamunanagar district alone.

The Minister was addressing a state-level programme organised by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department to mark Fasal Bima Saptah (Crop Insurance Week) in Radaur town. Also present were Director of Agriculture Raj Narayan Kaushik and Joint Director Rajeev Mishra as special guests.

“The scheme ensures that farmers pay minimal premiums and receive maximum compensation in case of crop damage,” Rana said, adding that lakhs of farmers have already benefited under PMFBY.

He highlighted that claims can now be filed through an online system, simplifying the process for farmers. He also clarified that crop insurance is voluntary for those with bank loans, while non-loanee farmers can independently opt into the scheme.

Currently, three insurance companies are implementing the scheme across Haryana, the minister said.

“I urge all farmers to complete their crop insurance before July 31, either at Common Service Centres (CSCs) or through their mobile phones,” Rana said.

He also used the occasion to promote natural farming practices, urging farmers to adopt environmentally sustainable techniques.

“If yields fall short under natural farming, the government will compensate farmers based on the five-year average yield,” he assured.

Calling for greater farmer participation in policy improvements, the minister invited farmers to submit practical suggestions for improving agricultural practices. “The government will consider and implement the best recommendations,” he promised.

As part of the day’s events, Rana also inaugurated a new Agriculture Department office above the city’s bus stand by cutting a ceremonial ribbon. Director Raj Narayan Kaushik presented a memento to the minister in appreciation of his contributions to farmer welfare.

The programme was held under the supervision of Yamunanagar Deputy Director of Agriculture Aditya Pratap Dabas.
