Crops in thousands of acres submerged in Panipat, Sonepat

Standing crops on thousands of acres in the area adjoining the Yamuna have been submerged, and land erosion has occurred in several villages of Panipat and Sonepat districts. In Sonepat, the land erosion has taken place at Bega and Pabnera villages. Due to Yamuna overflow, crops like sugarcane, pumpkin and other vegetables — in thousands of acres —have been submerged in villages of both districts.

A breach in the bundh occurred at Patthragarh village at three spots on Tuesday but was timely plugged by the irrigation department team with the support of villagers.

Similarly in Sonepat, land erosion has occurred at Pabnera and Bega villages in Gannaur area. The administration has shifted residents of Jajal village to safer places, while 40 families of Asadpur have been rescued.

DC Sonepat Sushil Sarwan, along with officers, visited several villages adjoining the Yamuna on Wednesday evening to review the situation. The DC appealed to the residents to keep vigil and said the district administration was on alert mode.

ADC Lakshit Sarren, along with officials, visited the Bega point — where the Yamuna enters Sonepat district — to assess the soil erosion situation.

DC Panipat Dr Virender Kumar Dahiya said the Yamuna had started receding and the water released from the Hathnikund Barrage had passed from the district.
