“The caller asked for help and then made a WhatsApp call saying there was a network problem and he asked me for a lot of information. I became suspicious of that person and I contacted my bank customer care to get my account closed by which time around Rs 5 lakh had been withdrawn from my account,” as per the complaint.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered. While investigating, the team of cybercrime police station, South, led by inspector Naveen Kumar arrested the accused from Chennai.

The accused was identified as Jafir Ansari, a native of village Jargarhi, Deoghar district in Jharkhand.

“During interrogation, the accused revealed that he and his other associates had given their numbers in the name of customer care of shaadi.com. Whenever someone searches for this customer care number, their number appears in the search engine.

After this they come to know who has searched the number. They then call that person themselves in the pretext

of help”.

“In the name of help, the fraudsters get bank account information by asking the person to click on a link and share the screen and then they would commit the fraud. We are trying to nab other accomplices of the accused”, said Priyanshu Dewan, ACP cyber.
