Stray cattle in Kurukshetra have been inconveniencing the residents. Kurukshetra is being promoted as a tourist destination, but a large number of cattle can be spotted in the residential areas, market places and even on the national highways. Recently, Punjabi Singer Harbhajan Mann’s car also met with an accident in Kurukshetra, due to a stray cow on the NH near Pipli.

An official said the persistent presence of stray cattle on the roads and public areas poses risks, including traffic disruption, road accidents, damage to property and health and sanitation hazards. The campaign aims at ensuring the systematic removal, tagging and rehabilitation of cattle. A special campaign for rehabilitation of stray cattle is being run from August 1 to 31.

Thanesar SDM Shashvat Sangwan on Wednesday held a joint meeting with the officials of the Municipal Council Thanesar, the agency responsible to catch and shift the cattle, the Animal Husbandry Department and the Police Department, to ensure relocation of the stray cattle from the roads.

The SDM said, “To make Thanesar stray cattle free, a joint meeting has been held on Wednesday and directions have been given to the departments concerned to relocate the stray cattle to gaushalas. The bulls will be sent to Hisar, while the cows will be shifted to the gaushalas. There are 12 gaushalas, a roaster will be prepared and the stray cows will be handed over to them as per their turn. The Police Department has been told to increase the night vigil in the bordering areas and take action against the people who leave the stray cattle in Kurukshetra.”

A fine will also be imposed on such cattle owners. All these cattle will be caught and shifted to gaushalas. The Animal Husbandry Department will do the ear tagging of each cow so that the same cows are not left on the roads again. A target of catching 20 stray cattle each day has been given. The officials have been told to maintain the record”, he added.

District Municipal Commissioner Aman Kumar said a campaign was launched for the rehabilitation of the stray animals and the cows will be sent to the gaushalas. All efforts are being made to make the roads stray cattle-free.
