Drone survey mapping workshop held at tech varsity

The department of architecture of Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology (DCRUST), Murthal, in collaboration with the Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI), New Delhi, recently conducted a one-day workshop on “Drone survey mapping: Geospatial information system and technology”.

Addressing the delegates, Vice-Chancellor Shree Prakash Singh emphasised the importance of such collaborative initiatives in bridging the gap between academia and industry.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the transformative potential of emerging technologies in urban planning and civil engineering — particularly the use of drones, satellite imagery, and

GIS platforms.

These technologies, he said, were revolutionising city planning, disaster management, and real-time monitoring of solid waste landfills. He encouraged students and professionals to adopt these tools in shaping smarter and more sustainable urban environments.

Registrar Ajay Kumar Garg said Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology was committed to fostering innovation and practical learning, especially in emerging areas of technology, which were key to future urban development.

Live drone demonstrations were conducted during the workshop at different places at the university. These demonstrations showcased topographic data capture and spatial analysis techniques. This was followed by an interactive session on the integration of geospatial data and its applications in city planning, transportation, and environmental monitoring.

Praveen Kumar, Dean (Faculty of Architecture, Urban and Town Planning), coordinated the event, which witnessed the participation of 40 delegates from various states.

He emphasised the importance of such hands-on experiences for both students and faculty.
