Over eight months after the Saini government officially changed the name of Bilaspur to Vyaspur, after legendary Maharishi Vyas, the Punjab and Haryana High Court is still in the dark about the name change.

“No request regarding the change of name of subdivision Bilaspur district, Yamunanagar, has been received in the high court till September 23, 2025,” said Naveen Kumar Sharma, Joint Registrar (Rules)-cum-Public Information Officer of the court, in reply to an RTI application.

The application was filed by advocate Hemant Kumar, who wanted to know whether any “mandatory consultations” were held with the court about the change of name of the Bilaspur subdivision by the Haryana Government.

The immediate provocation for filing the RTI application was a September 15 order of the state Chief Secretary, giving additional charge of secretary, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Lohgarh Foundation, to Vyaspur SDM. "The mere change of name of village Bilaspur does not automatically change the name of the Bilaspur subdivision,” Kumar contended.

On January 14, the government had officially changed the name of Bilaspur to Vyaspur. A notification effecting the change was issued by the government on April 29.

Meanwhile, the change of name has led to confusion among the public. While websites of the Chief Secretary and Yamunanagar district show Jaspal Singh, a 2019 batch HCS officer, as Vyaspur SDM, the Haryana Police website shows Harvinder Singh as Bilaspur DSP. The high court website lists six judicial magistrates in Bilaspur subdivision.
