In a life-saving procedure, a gastroenterologist at Aarvy Healthcare hospital in Gurugram successfully performed an emergency endoscopic operation to remove a micro lithium coin battery from the food pipe of a three-year-old.

The procedure, carried out within a critical two-hour window, prevented a potentially fatal chemical reaction that could have caused the food pipe to perforate and endangered the child’s life.

The battery had been accidentally ingested by the child while playing with a gadget. The child was quickly brought to the emergency ward of the hospital during the early hours of Saturday.

Dr Amit Yadav assessed the situation and transferred the child to the operating theatre to perform the endoscopic procedure. The experts at the hospital said had the battery remained in the food pipe for longer, it could have caused severe tissue burns due to a chemical reaction, posing life-threatening risks.

The hospital has since issued an advisory urging parents to keep small objects, such as coin batteries, out of reach of young children.
