Equipment delays push back Ambala Civil Enclave operations

The launch of domestic flights from the Civil Enclave in Ambala Cantonment has been delayed due to the non-installation of essential security equipment, including luggage scanners. The civil work for the project was completed last year and operations were initially expected to commence by August 2024.

The terminal, built on a 20-acre site adjacent to the Ambala Air Force Station, has an estimated cost of approximately Rs 22 crore. The land for the project was acquired at a cost of Rs 133 crore, with plans to use the Air Force runway for civilian operations.
Executive Engineer PWD (B&R) Ritesh Aggarwal said, “The civil work was completed last year. While some security equipment has arrived, others, including the luggage scanner, are still in transit. Efforts are being made to install the equipment at the earliest. The second phase, which includes additional blocks for security staff, airport personnel and a canteen, will begin soon, with tenders being floated in the coming days.”

Cabinet Minister Anil Vij, who has been instrumental in pushing this project forward, expressed optimism about its completion. “The project has gathered pace after I raised the matter with the Union Civil Aviation Minister. The luggage X-ray scanner and other equipment are expected to be installed soon. Haryana police, whose training has been completed, will be deployed here, and airport staff will also be transferred soon. We are hopeful that operations will begin shortly,” Vij stated.
The project was initially approved in December 2018 under the Udan 3.0 scheme but faced delays due to land acquisition issues. The foundation stone was eventually laid in October 2023.
