A retired school principal has filed a complaint with the Sirsa Economic Offences Wing accusing a local couple of defrauding him of Rs 40 lakh on the promise of securing judgeship for his son in the Rajasthan judiciary.

The complainant, Lalit Kumar, stated that he got acquainted with the couple through family ties.

According to the FIR, in May 2024, they promised him they could secure a government job for his son, who was preparing for the judicial service examination and practising at the local court in Sirsa.

Lalit claims the deal was finalised for Rs 1.6 crore -- Rs 60 lakh to be paid before and the remainder after the appointment. He reportedly raised Rs 60 lakh by mortgaging land and taking a bank loan.

When the examination results were declared in July 2024 and his son’s name did not appear on the list, Lalit asked for a refund. He says the couple returned only Rs 20 lakh.

The FIR also mentions that the couple later issued two post-dated cheques dated June and July 2025, but Lalit says remaining Rs 40 lakh was never received.

Both the complainant and accused are residents of Sirsa. Initially, the complaint was lodged with the Economic Offences Wing, which found evidence against the couple. The case has now been registered at Civil Lines police station under Sections 114, 120B, 171E, 418 and 420 of the IPC.

The police say investigation is underway and no arrests have been made so far. Authorities have emphasised that action against both parties would serve as deterrent against similar fraudulent schemes in the future.
