The body remained hidden for 14 days before a suspicious relative unearthed the crime.
The deceased, Channo Devi (26), had earlier been married in Marh village of Ratia, but returned to her parental home in Kata Kheri village after her marriage failed due to her illness. After her mother's death, she was cared for by her younger sister, until the latter got married on June 2.
With only Channo and her father Jeet Singh left in the house, the burden of care fell solely on him. Police said Jeet Singh grew increasingly mentally distressed and frustrated, eventually murdering his daughter on June 13 and burying her under a thatched portion inside the house.
The crime came to light on June 27, when Channo’s cousin Manjeet Singh visited and grew suspicious after receiving evasive answers about her whereabouts. On noticing disturbed soil, he immediately alerted the police.
A team from Sadar Police Station arrived and excavated the site, recovering Channo’s decomposed body. During interrogation, Jeet Singh confessed to the murder, citing his inability to manage her care as the motive.
SHO Kuldeep Singh of Sadar Police Station confirmed the sequence of events. “The accused was mentally stressed due to his daughter’s condition. Our initial investigation confirms it is a case of premeditated murder. Forensic teams are collecting evidence. Post-mortem will help determine the precise cause of death.”
Jeet Singh has been arrested and will be produced in court on Saturday. Police have registered a case under Sections 103(1) and 238(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The body has been sent to Agroha Medical College for post-mortem examination.
