Gurugram, August 4
To improve Gurugram’s connectivity with the Indira Gandhi International Airport, a 5-km flyover has been proposed on the Old Delhi-Gurugram Road.
It is expected to streamline the movement of vehicles going towards the IGI Airport in Delhi, especially during peak office hours.
This flyover was proposed in a meeting held between Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).
According to the proposal, the flyover would extend from the Atul Kataria Chowk to Samalka in Delhi. It would separate paths for airport-bound vehicles and those headed for other parts of Delhi. This separation is likely to reduce congestion on the busy road, which witnesses long traffic jams. Besides, the flyover would also reduce travel time by nearly three quarters for both flyers and other commuters.
It usually takes commuters around one-and-a-half hour to reach the IGI from the Atul Kataria Chowk during peak morning and evening hours. Once the flyover is completed, the travel time is expected to be reduced to just 30 minutes.
A senior GMDA official said, “We had preliminary discussions earlier this week on how we can improve the traffic flow between Gurugram and the IGI Airport. Being the primary route, NH-8 witnesses heavy traffic flow. Thus, there is a need to improve other connecting routes.”
“The agency has submitted its recommendations and we have also shared our suggestions so that the finer details can be finalised and a decision can be reached,” the official added.
The planned Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and Gurugram Metro corridors are also set to come up in the vicinity. Thus, feedback from other stakeholders would also be taken into consideration, said the senior GMDA official.
If approved, the 5km-long flyover with six lanes would provide a dedicated corridor for airport-bound traffic, thus streamlining overall traffic flow on the Old Delhi-Gurugram Road.
The study commissioned by DIAL has proposed short, mid, and long-term plans to alleviate bottlenecks on the airport route from Gurugram. It observed that the Old Delhi- Gurugram Road faces snarl-ups due to the lack of link roads to the Dwarka Expressway. Thus it has been suggested that sub-arterial roads should be developed to enhance connectivity. A 3.2-km-long four-lane flyover has also been proposed from the Rezang La Chowk.
The National Highway-8 faces long traffic congestion during peak hours, especially between Ambience Mall and Shankar Vihar, partly due to unplanned service lane entries and exits. Ambience Mall in particular is a major bottleneck due to the narrowing of lanes at the MCD toll plaza.
