Irrigation Minister Shruti Choudhry said timely excavation and widening of the Tangri before the monsoon prevented flooding in Ambala Cantonment this year, despite water levels crossing the danger mark.

At midnight on August 6, the Tangri’s water level reached 9.5 feet — about 20,900 cusecs — well above the danger mark of 7 feet (15,400 cusecs). In previous years, such levels would have submerged several colonies, causing losses worth crores.

“Due to timely excavation work and the department’s foresight, the danger was averted this time,” Choudhry said.

Before the rains, the department began deepening and widening the riverbed from Ramgarh Majra to Bhunni village, though only half the work could be completed before monsoon set in. Even so, the river’s water-carrying capacity increased significantly, she said.

Temporary dams were also built at Sarsehri and Chandpura, ensuring that despite high water levels, nearby areas remained safe.

The Minister detailed how the river’s flow rose from 11,000 cusecs at 11 am to 15,400 cusecs by 4 pm on August 6, peaking at 20,900 cusecs by midnight. In earlier years, such surges would have flooded New Tagore Garden, New Ekta Vihar, Prabhu Prem Puram, Rampur, Sarsehri, Chandpura and Kardhan.

“Earlier, the gates of the Maheshnagar Pump House would close at just 2.5 feet, causing rainwater to accumulate in the city. This time, the gates closed at 4.5 feet, providing major relief to the public,” she said.

Choudhry assured that the government will continue proactive measures to ensure public safety.

“The government stands with the people during any natural disaster, and there is no need for the public to worry,” she added.

She has instructed officials to take all necessary steps for water drainage in flood-prone areas and has personally visited waterlogged zones.
