Four shopkeepers challaned for using banned single-use plastic items in Jagadhri

Rs 17,500 fine collected

A joint team of the Municipal Corporation, Yamunanagar-Jagadhri (MCYJ) and Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) raided several markets in Jagadhri to stop the usage of banned single-use plastic items.

During the raid, the joint team recovered banned polythene bags and thermocol items from four shopkeepers.

The team challaned the four shopkeepers and collected a fine of Rs 17,500 from them.

According to information, two teams have been formed under the leadership of Chief Sanitary Inspector (CSI) Harjeet Singh in Zone-1 of the MCYJ and CSI Anil Nain in Zone-2 to stop the usage of single-use plastic items.

The joint team first reached near Arya Kanya School in Jagadhri, which recovered a large quantity of banned polythene bags from a shopkeeper here.

The team issued a challan of Rs 10,000 to him and seized the recovered polythene.

Thereafter, the team recovered banned thermocol items from a shop on Bhavana road and issued a challan of Rs 3,000 to the shopkeeper.

The team also reached near Dimple Cineplex and recovered polythene from a shopkeeper. The team issued a challan of Rs 1,500 to the said shopkeeper.

The team also recovered polythene bags from a shopkeeper near ESI Hospital.

He was issued a challan of Rs 3,000 and the recovered polythene was confiscated.

CSI Harjeet Singh said on the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Akhil Pilani raids were being conducted at shops to stop the usage of single-use plastic items.

He said that from July 1, 2020, a complete ban was imposed on the use of 19 plastic items including polythene bags, plastic spoons, donas, glasses, ice cream sticks, plates, cups, forks, straws, trays, thermocol decorative items, PVC banners, earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons and plastic flags.
