A machine has been installed at a gaushala being operated by the Rohtak Municipal Corporation in Peharawar village to make ‘diyas’ (earthen lamps) from cow dung.

The machine was inaugurated by MC Commissioner Anand Sharma on Friday. The initiative is part of an ongoing plan to develop the gaushala into a model facility.

On the occasion, Sharma said the new lamp-making machine had been operationalised, and would be run through a self-help group.

In a meeting held earlier, officials were directed to ensure the proper disposal and utilisation of cow dung at the gaushala.

Following the directive, a plan was formulated to produce useful products from dung, and begin vermicomposting.

The Inner Wheel Club, Rohtak City, extended its support to the MC for the initiative, and donated the machine to the gaushala.

“The gaushala currently houses around 2,500 cattle, which produce approximately 12,000-kg dung. The corporation has already initiated work for dung disposal, including vermicomposting and the installation of machines to produce blocks resembling wooden logs from dung,” the MC Commissioner added.

Sharma said instructions had also issued to install additional machinery to further scale production of the wood-like blocks.
