Gurugram Metro to begin phase-1 construction in May

Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) is set to begin construction work on Phase-1 of the new metro line in May this year. The project would involve the construction of a 15.2 km viaduct and 14 elevated stations, running from HUDA City Centre to Sector 9 in the city. The estimated cost of this part of the project is Rs 1,286 crore.

Last week, GMRL issued a tender for the construction work. The bids would be opened on April 22, with the work order to be issued to the successful bidder shortly after. If the project progresses according to schedule, the first section of the new metro line is expected to be completed by mid-2027.

The new metro line would begin at HUDA City Centre and include stations in Sector 45, Sector 46 (Cyber Park), Sector 47, Subhash Chowk, Sector 48, Sector 33, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar 6, Sector 10, Sector 37, Basai and Sector 9. A spur would also connect Basai to the Dwarka Expressway at the Sector 101 station.

The entire project would span 28.5 km, including a 1.85 km spur from Basai Village to Dwarka Expressway. The main 26.65 km corridor, running from HUDA City Centre to Cyber City, would be elevated, with 27 stations. It would also feature a depot interchange with the Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line at HUDA City Centre, providing direct connectivity between significant parts of Gurugram and Delhi.

Once completed, the metro line would serve as an efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system for the people of Gurugram and surrounding areas. The project received approval from the state government in August 2020, with a total estimated cost of Rs 6,821.13 crore.

Currently, the city operates only two metro lines — a 7 km section of Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line and a 12.85-km Rapid Metro corridor.

As per the tender, the selected contractor would also be responsible for conducting a detailed survey of the viaduct alignment, constructing the station structures, including track supports and commercial areas and setting up a control room for communication links between offices and work sites.
